The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is an independent review of the quality of research in the UK's Higher Education institutions. It's the benchmark of a university's research success.

Research that has an international impact

In 7 of the 15 units of assessment we submitted to the REF 2014, the impact of our research was rated 'outstanding' and 'very considerable' in reach and significance.

University of Portsmouth research rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent'

89% of our research in Physics and 90% of our research in Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy was rated as 'world-leading' and 'internationally excellent'.

The REF results are important because they:

  • Show the quality of our research
  • Expand our reputation
  • Show how effectively we spend our research funding
  • Help us make our case for further funding

We’re busy redesigning our website and this page is still a work-in-progress – but you can still find all the relevant, up-to-date details on our REF 2014 submission at
