Technology underpins all facets of modern life and evolves at relentless speeds. Over the course of our lifetime, we would have witnessed major breakthroughs that will have a significant impact and reach on society. Our purpose is to educate our students to participate in creating and applying contemporary knowledge and technological advances to make a difference.
We're solving societal problems through practical, affordable and sustainable solutions. A central question drives our research: how do we make technology, engineering and science more relevant to the wellbeing of human beings and the world? We produce impactful research with practical applications through our collaborative partnerships with universities, research bodies and industry leaders.
Each year, around 1,000 students graduate from our programmes. Our graduates are making a big difference to the world, whether developing low-carbon solutions, building water treatment plants in developing countries, helping to keep the nation's data systems secure, or educating the next generation of maths teachers.

Our students learn in an environment geared towards practical skills, employability and challenging assumptions about how things work. To support them we have facilities including the Future Technology Centre, hydraulics lab, structures lab, Environmental Technology Field Station, Digital Forensics and Cyber Security Lab, the SAP Next Generation Lab, and the Atomic Force Microscope Lab.
Our lecturers are coaches and mentors, guiding students through their studies. All our courses are designed around the realities of working in industry and tackling societal challenges. Our Student Placement and Employability team helps students gain work experience and placement opportunities.
We reach out to young students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) through events and partnerships with schools and colleges. Our annual Girls in STEM event offers Year 9 girls the opportunity to explore science, technology and engineering by building vehicles and bridges, learning forensic coding, and exploring space.
We're a research leader among post-1992 universities, and we're building on our strong results in the Research Excellence Framework 2014. In the REF 2014, 96% of our physics research outputs were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, 80% of our maths research impact was rated as having considerable reach and significance, 100% of our computer science and informatics research impact was rated as outstanding or very considerable, and 61% of our research in aeronautical, mechanical, chemical and manufacturing engineering was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent.
We recently brought together businesses, councils and environmental groups to increase flood protection and sustainable drainage in housing developments through our ProSuDS project - 'Providing Real-world Opportunities for Sustainable Drainage Systems'.
We're also working with businesses, the public sector and other universities to increase solar power generation across England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands through our involvement with the 'Solar Adoption Rise in the 2 Seas' project, or 'SOLARISE'. The goal of this project is a 20% increase in renewable energy consumption by 2020.

We're exploring how computational paradigms and algorithms can be used to make a positive difference in a variety of human-machine systems – and our research in computational intelligence is already making an impact.

The Centre works with the NHS, and Oxford and Southampton universities to improve healthcare delivery and administration through better use of information systems and computer science.
We pair our mathematical expertise with public and private sector partners to solve complex problems with technology, efficiency and sustainability. Recent projects explored ways to make transport systems more efficient and how analytics can be used to improve healthcare and renewable energy.
Our Cosmology and Astrophysics research investigates the evolution of galaxies and their stars, the early universe and large-scale structure in the cosmos, as well as the energy content of the Universe and the nature of gravity.
