Learning spaces and facilities
All our teaching spaces, learning facilities and halls of residences are close to the city centre. So everything's right on your doorstep.
The campus is interspersed with green spaces and communal areas such as cafes and coffee shops.
Here are some of the learning spaces and facilities you'll use. And there's more to come – we're currently spending £400 million on new buildings and facilities.
The University Library
Our spacious and comfortable library is open to you 24 hours a day during term time.
Work on group projects in the meeting pods, settle down in a comfy chair to catch up with course reading or take a break in the library cafe.
The library has around 380,000 printed books, 600,000 e-books and 55,000 e-journals available plus DVDs, maps, online newspapers and microfilms. You can access many of these resources off-campus.
Our friendly, supportive and experienced staff will help you make the most of all the materials. You can chat with them in person or online.
Specialist Faculty Librarians work with lecturers to make sure you have instant access to the resources you need for your coursework.
On the rare occasion we don’t have what you need, we’ll help you source it from another library through our interlibrary loan service.
The 3rd Space
The 3rd Space is a social and learning space in the Students’ Union building. Here you can meet with friends and study together. Or spend some quiet time reading or catching up online.
It’s open from 8am to midnight every day during term time.
Future Technology Centre (FTC)
Our Future Technology Centre for science and engineering students allows you to get hands-on experience with specialist technologies.
You’ll use the latest simulation, visualisation and modelling equipment, and experience advanced techniques such as digital microscopy and laser sintering.
You’ll also get to work with the external companies that use the FTC’s facilities and equipment. This is a great way to network with potential employers and work on real projects.
Forensic Innovation Centre (FIC)
Our Forensic Innovation Centre (FIC) is the UK’s first university-based operational police forensic research facility.
Here you can work alongside Hampshire Constabulary's scientific staff and our academics. Together, you'll research the tests and techniques the police use to solve crime more effectively.
Our Bloomberg Suite gives you access to the same data, analytics and software used by over 250,000 finance professionals around the world.
Monitor and analyse real-time financial market data movements and hone your trading skills in our virtual environment.
Professional Interpreter Training Suite
Translation students use the latest Televic Interpreter Training Suite. Televic is a leader in professional communication technology, supplying equipment to the European Parliament and international industries.
You can use this suite to practice your translation skills in simulated meetings and conferences.
Centre for Simulation in Health and Care
Our Centre for Simulation in Health and Care helps you develop the practical skills you need to work in a health and care-related career in a safe, realistic learning environment.
The Centre is equipped for a variety of simulations. Whatever career lies ahead of you, you'll get the hands-on training you need. Facilities include a simulated GP surgery, care home, one-bedroom flat, ambulance and two acute hospital training wards.
Dental Pre-Clinical Skills Laboratory
The Dental Pre-Clinical Skills Laboratory is a 26-bench laboratory for Dental Hygienist and Dental Therapist students. You can use it to develop your pre-clinical periodontal, restorative and paediatric dentistry skills.
Each station has a dental hand piece, suction tool, overhead dental lamp and computer monitor.
Motion Capture Studio
Our Motion Capture Studio uses the industry-standard Vicon optical system. You can use it to record the movement of objects and people to create visual effects in areas such as gaming, virtual reality and film.
The studio provides professional services to commercial clients such as film studios. This gives you experience working on real projects during your studies.
